He married Caroline Jane Horsley (born 1849 in Lambeth) on 20th October 1866 at The Independent Chapel in Chelmsford, Essex (Wesleyan Methodists)

1871 Census – Living in Lower Green, Sandon, Essex with Arthur, 4 and Emily, 2 Months. Joseph is an Ag Lab. Clara is a visitor with the Fewell family in Chelmsford on that day.
1881 Census - Living at 39 Bell & Anchor Cottages, Plaistow with Arthur, Emily, Clara J, Roseanna, Charles, Harry, George & Edna Susan. No occupation given for Joseph.
1891 Census – Living at 29 Huntingdon Street, Canning Town with Emily, Rosa, Harry, George, Florence, Beatrice & Albert. Joseph is a Labourer, Emily, a domestic servant and Rosa, a machinist.
1901 Census – Living in 19 Sarah Street, Tidal Basin, West Ham with Charles, Harry, George, Florence & Albert. Also a granddaughter, Mabel Carins born 1894 in West Ham. They have 2 boarders living with them called William Lingwood and Thomas Sarley. Joseph and Charles are labourers, Harry is a Groom and George is a Carman.
1911 Census - He is a widower now and living at 55 Lansdowne Road, Tidal Basin with daughter Florence and son in law Alfred Peters. Also living with them is his son Albert Lewis.
Alfred is a fillers labourer at Soap works. Joseph is a coal porter on the railways and Albert is a general labourer at the Thames Iron Works.
